Climate Action and Sustainability

At Clarendon Primary School, we believe that it is important that all children have an understanding of sustainability and climate action. We believe that children are at the centre of sustainability and climate action and aim to empower them with a range of knowledge and skills, so that they can positively impact and improve the sustainability of the environment around them. Children take part in a range of activities and experiences to enrich their understanding. This includes working with the local community, building links with external organisations to create a more sustainable community. Sustainability and climate action is woven through the school’s curriculum and is an integral part of all aspects of school life- children are encouraged to become well-rounded global citizens for sustainability and climate action change.

Meet ERNEST, our ECO Warrior avatar, which has been created by our ECO Warriors. During ECO Warrior meetings, children came up with design ideas for an avatar, including features linked to climate action and sustainability. Then, the children worked together to create a name-ERNEST. They decided to create an acronym for its name- each letter stands for an ECO value that collectively they came up with.

Below are the four areas that are linked to the DFE’s Sustainability and Climate Action Change Strategy (click the link above to read more about this). These are the four areas that as a school, we are basing our work around in order for us to become a more sustainable school.


The process of removing the amount of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases that are released into the atmosphere.

Strategies that are put in place to respond to and prepare for the effects of climate change

Learning about climate and careers that directly tackle climate change.

Includes all of the features, forces and processes of earth such as, climate, water, geology and weather. Learning all about the variety of life on earth and the interactions between living things.



Roles and Responsibilities for Group 1

This ECO team are focusing on Biodiversity, Food and Composting. This will include:

  • Completing an environmental review linked to the above.
  • Having an understanding of what biodiversity, food and composting consist of at Clarendon Primary School.
  • Informing children and staff about biodiversity, food, food waste and composting.
  • Learning about and managing ECO-systems within the school.
  • Looking at ways to encourage more wildlife, plants and flowers into our school environment.
  • Observing and recording nature in our school environment.
  • Advising families on how to support biodiversity at home.
  • Encouraging staff and children to eat more plant-based foods.
  • Reducing food waste in school and ensuring we recycle food waste by composting, where possible.

Roles and Responsibilities for Group 2

This team will focus on Energy and Waste Management. This will include:

  • Completing an environmental review linked to the above.
  • Having an understanding of what energy and waste management looks like at Clarendon Primary School.
  • Monitoring energy consumption in school.
  • Making other children and staff aware of how to reduce their energy consumption.
  • Encouraging pupils and staff to reduce their carbon footprint.
  • Managing the ‘Cut Your Carbon Campaign’.
  • Informing pupils and staff about recycling and how to recycle correctly.
  • Monitoring waste within the school, ensuring everyone is correctly recycling.
  • Reducing food waste in school and ensuring we recycle food waste by composting, where possible.

  • Community litter pick at Heywood Park.
  • Collaborate song writing with cluster schools linked to the Global Goals.

 

  • ECO members meeting to plan activities for the forthcoming year.
  • Community Litter Pick at Leverhulme Park
  • Collaborative song writing with cluster schools to create a song linked to sustainability and climate action.
  • Enviro-Fest hosted by Bolton School. A performance of songs linked to sustainability and climate action, including a song created by the children.
